What is Animation?

This seems like a pretty staight forward question. Thanks to newer technology, many people are having a hard time definig just what qualifies as an "animated" film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is having the same troubles, especially when it comes to nominating films in this year's animated category.
